Procedures Available
This procedure provides the physician with a visual of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The endoscope is flexible and equipped with a small camera which transmits images to the computer for close evaluation. This procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis but does require sedation. In addition to a visual exam, the endoscope can also remove polyps or tumors for tissue sample biopsy.
Capsule Endoscopy:
Capsule endoscopy is a patient-friendly tool for visual examination of the entire small bowel. The video capsule contains an imaging device and light source at both ends and transmits over 50,000 images during the eight hour procedure. Patients are fitted with a sensor belt and data recorder to capture the transmitted images, swallow the small capsule, then are able to resume daily activities. The patient passes naturally with a bowel movement, usually within 24 hours.

Colonoscopies are performed not only due to unusual symptoms such as colitis, diverticulosis, and diverticulitis but also for the preventative colon cancer screening for patients within certain criteria. This procedure helps in the diagnosis of colon cancer which, when detected early, offers high cure rates. Colonoscopies may also be performed if a patient suffers from abdominal pain or discomfort, anemia or chronic diarrhea or constipation. This procedure is also generally performed on an outpatient basis but does require sedation. In addition to a visual exam, polyps can also be removed for tissue sample biopsy.
